‘Ambition Centre for Training have been providing the Hairdressing course at Lasswade since 2008. During that time we have been able to provide young people with the opportunity to see first hand the demands of working in a salon. All of the students have completed work experience in a salon and nearly 50% of each year group have been able to gain fulltime hairdressing work locally.

The staff from ACT have been very professional and have worked well with staff in the school to provide this addition to our curriculum.’

‘Bathgate Academy worked in partnership with ACT to deliver hairdressing units to a group of S4 students. The programme was highly successful with all students progressing onto positive destinations whether it was onto full-time employment within salons or continuing their education at school or in a further education setting.’

‘ACT was introduced to Earlston High School in 2010 and has successfully taught Intermediate 1 Skills for Work in Hairdressing for three years. The course is well organised and there is excellent liaison between ACT and the school. In the early stages, ACT was instrumental in supporting the school to design its salon and promote the course to pupils and parents.’

Two years ago, the course was verified by the Scottish Qualifications Authority. This involved an onsite meeting with the SQA verifier, who met with students and staff and scrutinised the pupils’ work and assessments. These were all found to be in line with the SQA arrangements and the delivery commended as an example of good practice.

Each year, the pupils at the school are keen to enrol on the course and such is the high level of interest there is a selection process and ACT work with the school to select the students.

The course has proved both popular and valuable. It gives students the opportunity to develop their skills within hairdressing, but often more importantly develops their employability and personal skills. Students grow in confidence, work effectively with others and develop a range of skills for life. For some students it gives them a chance to excel and feel positive about school. These students respond admirably to the style of delivery and enjoy being responsible in the salon, often offering to help at school events which otherwise they would not have done.

The course articulates beautifully with local college courses and students place themselves in a strong position for a college place having studied hairdressing at school. We would be unable to deliver the course without ACT. The course has been superb at supporting students to have a positive destination after school: some into apprenticeships and some onto college courses.

I fully recommend Ambition Centre for Training to you. The company has give Earlston School a professional service which is highly valued.’

‘We had worked with a few providers before but our experiences were not always positive. They were passing trainees before they were ready and who were not at the standards we would expect. But then ACT came along with its concept of training as collaboration. It has been excellent. We can give our trainees the practical education we desire, while ACT looks after the theoretical side.’

‘ACT has lifted the burden of SVQ paperwork for us, allowing us to concentrate on running our salon and giving our juniors the best practical training we can provide. My star stylist came through ACT and I could really do with a blueprint of her to copy. Isabel is a great motivator for all my staff, including me. At times I can be the most disorganised person in the salon, but Isabel and ACT keep me on track with their superb training structure.’

‘We have been using ACT as our training provider since January 2011. ACT has fitted in very well with our own in salon training programmed, so although we are working with the portfolios we are still teaching to our salon standard and the two fit well together. The team at ACT are responsive to our needs, they communicate exceptionally well with our Assistants and there is never a problem only a solution, which fits in with our salon ethos. I would strongly recommend ACT to any salon who want to deliver SVQ’s in house.’

‘ACT has played a vital role in our training programme allowing our trainees to gain their SVQ qualifications. It suits the salon and our trainees to have ACT come in and train in this way. We have worked with them for a number of years now and they have been very supportive, understanding and very professional.’

‘Kerry from Act spends 2/3 days a week at our Training school in PSA Commercial Quay. She helps our assistants towards gaining their NVQ Level 2 & 3 certificate; she is very kind, patient, knowledgeable and very accommodating. She is always readily available at the end of the phone for any queries when she is not in our salon. Kerry complements our training school and we work compatibly together supporting our assistants in attaining a recognized qualification in hairdressing.’
